Notes for BRENDAN SEAN MCGUIRE: Brendan's cause of death was La Exomphalos. Another name for this is Gastroschisis or in other words the intestines were formed on the outside of the stomach, ( Hernia of the Abdomen ). He died after a major operation. He is buried with his great grandmother and now also his great aunt in grave no. FCD 175.28 at the St. Woollos cemetery, Newport.
After his death in 1974, the Royal Gwent Hospital put myself under great duress to sign a post mortem consent form. At this time his mother, June did not know that he had died. We have always believed that this post mortem was carried out and in December 1999, the Gwent Healthcare Authority made a "Pledge to Parents" that they had never carried out post mortems on children. I wrote to Gwent Healthcare and told them that a post mortem had been carried out on Brendan and asked their assurances that he was buried complete. After a number of weeks they sent a representative to our home who told us that they have never carried out post mortems on children, never carried out a post mortem on Brendan and therefore they did not hold any body samples of Brendan, so he was buried complete.
In 2001 a family were told that Gwent Healthcare had carried out a post mortem on their child and that they were still holding tissue samples of their child, eight years after their child's death and burial. The South Wales Argus contacted Gwent Healthcare and the health authority told the newspaper exactly what I was told years earlier, that no post mortem had been carried out on Brendan. They also confirmed this in writing and also noted that I did believe what was said to us by their representative.
Again in February 2002, two other women were told that their children had had post mortems carried out on them and that the Royal Gwent Hospital were still holding tissue samples of their children some twenty years later. This prompted me to write to the health authority again and seven weeks later they now confirmed that they did carry out a post mortem on Brendan and that they are still holding block and slide samples of his body nearly 28 years after his death.
On June 6. 2002 a second funeral took place to bury Brendan's remains in his grave. It was at the same time and on the same date as the original funeral, exactly 28 years after the first.

These are brief note's of Carton's military service in the US Navy, they are in his own words....
I was in the Navy from 1969 until 1973. I was a jet engine mechanic, crew chief and had what is called a "back-seat" license to fly in jets. I was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Service ribbon. I was stationed aboard the USS Enterprise while on tour in Vietnam and attained the rank of 2nd Class Petty Officer by the start of my third year. I was awarded a partial disability pension for an infection caught from eating bad food in the Philippines and at the completion of my enlistment of four years of active duty and two years of inactive reserves was Honorably discharged in July of 1975. Prior to my tour aboard the Enterprise I was stationed at a naval facility in the middle of the Mojave Desert called China Lake for nearly three years. I was an intermediate level jet mechanic and was one of the first mechanics to work on and access the feasibility of the US military's decision to purchase the British jet the AV8A Harrier for combat use for the Marines.
